American robots lose jobs to Asian robots as Adidas shifts manufacturing

The Adidas – a German sportswear company – plans to close high-tech “robot” factories in Germany and the United States that it launched to bring production closer to customers.  The company will deploy some of its robot technology in Asia because it would be “more economic and flexible.”

Adidas started production of shoes largely by robots at its “Speedfactory” in

(1) Ansbach near its Bavarian headquarters in 2016

(2)  Atlanta, Georgia in the U. S. in 2017.

Adidas has recently shifted most of its production to Asia.  The company now relies on more than 1 million workers in contract factories, particularly in China and Vietnam.
